Paul Allen’s Octopus

You can use all the adjectives you want to describe Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen’s 414-foot Octopus yacht, but whatever you choose, it’s sure to be an understatement. The vessel is among the world’s largest privately owned yachts and, at $10.5 billion in value, there is absolutely no question that this megayacht is well-suited for a billionaire.

First of all, the ship has a pool on deck. Though it is kind of a “bring sand to the beach” mentality, who could blame him? A late night dip in the dark ocean waters seems much more ominous than the well-lit on deck option. The Octopus has a cruise ship air about it, so a pool is fitting—even expected.

Next, the liner has two helipads, each anchoring the bow and aft at the top deck. Octopus is also home to a basketball court, seven smaller boats, jet ski docks, and a submarine, which can keep up to 10 people for up to two weeks underwater. The yacht also has a remote-controlled crawler that makes exploring the ocean floor effortless.

Among the 60 full-time crew members are former Navy Seals who help keep the Octopus in sea-worthy shape. This ship is one of Paul Allen’s three mega yachts and was built by German shipbuilders Lürssen. Since it was released to Allen in 2003, the Octopus has cruised into locales like Greece, Tahiti, and Norway and has hosted plenty of high-profile guests including Johnny Cash, Usher, U2, and designer extraordinaire Diane von Furstenberg.
