While July 4th was a day for most Americans to illuminate the night sky with blooming and bombastic firecrackers in celebration of independence from British rule, rich Russians in Moscow engaged in a spirited water battle with Monaco. Of course it had nothing to do with politics; life in Monaco is filled with other distractions. The two countries were just taking part in Moscow’s Yacht Festival, which ran from July 2 – 5. This year’s centerpiece event was a regatta between Russia and Monaco’s dragon yachts with Prince Albert’s racing yacht taking center stage on the visiting countries’ side. Other water events included free sailing lessons for participants, an exhibition of the latest yacht technology, and a business geared clinic on how to handle vessels.

Spectators and non-regatta participants weren’t just treated to an eyeful on the water, they also got an earful on land. The event’s White Concert was the highlight musical event and featured Russia’s headliners and up-and-comers alongside an international sampling, which included groups from Britain Belarus, France, and others.

More than just a show to delight Russia’s yacht crowd, earnings from this year’s Moscow Yacht Festival was dedicated to rehabilitating Moscow’s polluted waterways.
