The Columbus Sport, a new eco friendly yacht, is set to hit the open seas in 2013.

This floating beauty boasts amenities ranging from “Beach Club”, a sundeck large enough for eight, a “Saloon”, and interiors embellished with some of the world’s finest marble. Still, the greatest amenity the Columbus offers is the lack of impact is has on the environment. It may not be the all-time largest yacht to hit the market, ringing in at 130 feet, but it will hold the reputation to be the most environmentally friendly.

Columbus’ aluminum exterior is what makes it lightweight and allows it to limit its use of energy. More astoundingly, this super yacht not only aids in prevention of air pollution but also of noise pollution. Its electrical engines can reach speeds of up to 7.5 knots without making a sound.

A billionaire wishing to own the world’s first eco-friendly yacht would need to dish out $30 million in order to make it their own.

The new Port Adriano Marina in Mallorca by Philippe Starck is quite a sight to see. It’s almost invisible while pared down an elegant structure that is home to restaurants, bars, a car park, fashion and nautical stores, as well as a marina.

Starck was brought aboard by Antonio Zaforteza, owner of Ocibar, which is the island’s flourishing nautical-management company.

For the marina, Starck drew upon his intense dislike for onsite parking spaces, instead creating a structure that artfully concealed an underground car park below sea level. He created a clean, linear, two-level structure featuring concrete columns, topped off with a slatted wood roof and a striking staircase lit from beneath. Design details include street lights modelled on standing lamps, handsome numbered steel mooring plates and chic bollards.

The marina is located on the south-west bay of Palma de Mallorca, the capital of the Balearic Islands.

Russian oligarch Andrey Melnichenko is still enjoying his £300 million, 400-foot long yacht four years after he purchased the megayacht, and the proof is in the pictures. Melnichenko’s ‘Lair’ was spotted near the shore of Monaco yesterday.

Lair comes with a similarly styled speedboat for easy access to and from shore.

The owner of a €700 Dutch-built super yacht named Air currently moored at Cabh is still a mystery.

The Air costs a reported $750,000 a week to charter and features 7 staterooms with accommodations for 12 guests, a sundeck gym and pool, helicopter pad, split-level owner’s suite, 102-inch movie screen, jet skis, kayaks and an elevator to every floor.

According to Boat International, the Air is now renamed ‘Ice’ and is owned by Russian billionaire Suleyman Kerimov, the 116th richest person in the world and owner of the Russian football side Anzhi Makhachkala. He has a fortune worth an estimated $6.02 billion.

The Cannes Film Festival, with its lovely setting on the breathtaking Mediterranean Sea, is almost synonymous with the superyachts it attracts.

Yachts at Cannes make up its own subculture in the festival’s festivities. Super yachts are anchored on the Cannes harbor, but about 60 A-list boats are parked along the jetty Albert Edouard in the shadow of the Palais, turning the jetty into a sort of luxury park on water.

Most yachts are rented by banks, private financiers and film commissions from around the world, and Hollywood agents will scanter up and down the docks looking for investors for their movies. Prices to rent these yachts range anywhere from $130,000 to $400,000 a week.

The application process for scoring a super yacht on the jetty is daunting. One mistake on the 16-page application can cause the entire paperwork to be returned, and spots are rented out on a first-come, first-serve basis. And here’s a quirk: anyone who says they have a berth before it is officially announced will be banned from applying for one year with the exclusion being widely publicized.

And once you actually have the berth, be prepared to pay $1,000, which is modest for a spot on the French Riviera.

A few days before the Wally 50-meter super yacht ‘Better Place’ launched in Ancona, Italy, it got a pretty heavy makeover; experts successfully completed the stepping of her 67.5-meter long carbon mast, the longest ever manufactured by the United States facility Hall.

The exclusive sailing yacht has been equipped with a four-spreader high modulus carbon mast, an Oceanfurl boom, also the largest ever built by Hall, and a special mast collar to support halyards and sheets. Also, 18 antennas are mounted on the spreaders for the ultimate monitoring and navigation systems.

The mast stepping was carefully planned and supervised by Hall manager Andrea Merani. The stepping was smooth and neat, even with the boat on the hard. It was necessary to hoist the mast up 12 meters to feed the mast collar on the deck.

Formally landlocked Arkansas boy turned-billionaire Darwin Deason and wife Kat have lived on his 205-foot mega yacht Apogee three to six months out of the year since he took ownership in 2004.

The mammoth boat has 12,000-square feet of living space, combining the privacy of a sprawling home with the amenities of most luxury hotels. It holds a crew of 17 plus two security guards to cater to the billionaire’s every whim. Deason onced said that he will never truly retire, and that if it weren’t for his family, he’d spend 10 months on the boat instead of 6.

Deason, however, won’t say what he paid for the super yacht, but it would sell for an estimated $70 million today. He docks the yacht in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida for two months out of the year for maintenance.

True to his business roots, Deason charters Apogee four or five times out of the year “dry,” meaning only the boat and crew are included in the $400,000 fee, and guests have to fork up an additional $200,000 for fuel, tipping and food.

Asia’s largest marine event, the Hong Kong Gold Coast Boat Show 2012, is set to take sail Friday through Sunday at the Gold Coast Yacht and Country Club (1 Castle Peak Road, Castle Peak Bay).

The show will feature more than 80 boat brands from the world’s leading manufacturers, totaling an estimated $500 million worth of merchandise.

A number of the latest boat models will debut at the show as well as the latest boats from brands such as Azimut, Sunseeker, Fairline, IAG, Hugo Boss, Jeanneau and Horizon and the latest in marine products, services, electronics, outboard engines, accessories and water sports equipment.

Live music and a fashion show by VIVIENNE TAM will entertain guests; a food fair, children’s entertainment and beer garden will also be featured at the show.

Overmarine launched the luxury yacht Mangusta 92, which features a plethora of improvements including a new soundproofing system that ensures a quieter ride and a lower deck that features a modern design.

The lower deck holds three cabins and a large lounge, and all areas are enhanced with high-tech entertainment systems.

Mangusta 92 is just as fast as it is elegant. It can reach speeds up to 40 knots with help from the twin MTU 2600Hp engines and two Kamewa 56S3 hydrojets.
