This Russian billionaire’s yacht might not be the largest on the seas, but it’s certainly one of the most talked about.
Andrey Melnichenko’s Philippe Starck-designed superyacht “A” measures 394 feet, and all comprised within is pure, over-the-top luxury. Think spiral staircase, silver-leaf walls, finger-print security systems and bomb-proof glass. Yes, the master bedroom is as safe as it is decadent: the king size bed rotates with the touch of a button for easy positioning for watching the 60-inch plasma TV as well as the sunrise and sunset.
Melnichenko has kept “A” something of a sea-bound secret, though; few images of the yacht have surfaced, and he and his wife do not frequently entertain on the majestic watercraft.
Still, some dazzling details have leaked. Baccarat-crystal tables, floor-to-ceiling mirrors, walls of sting ray hides and other exotic animal skins make “A” unlike any other superyacht. In 23,600 square feet of living space the yacht accommodates a crew of about 37 people, including engineers, stewards, housekeepers and activity specialists to assist with jet skiing, surfing and the like.
The exterior of the yacht is as impressive as the inside. A low-slung hull, sleek design and shape that mimics a submarine combine to render the $300 million “A” unique and, though some have tried, inimitable.
According to Starck, “This boat has elegance and intelligence, it is not trying to show the money.”
