Nearly 40 international crews have been registered to compete in the 23rd Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup, the pinnacle event of the Mediterranean sailing season set to take place Sept. 2 though 8.
Rolex as supported the cup, held in Porto Cervo, Sardinia, every year since 1985. The five-day race encompasses the Maddalena Archipelago, an environment perfectly suited for such an intense competition with guaranteed gusts, scenic raters and rocky shorelines.
The competition is divided into five categories by size: Supermaxi, Maxi Racing, Maxi Racing/Cruising, Wally and Mini Maxi. The two-time world champion 72-foot Rán 2, owned by Niklas Zennström, is currently entered in the Mini Maxi division.
The cup is organized by Yacht Club Costa Smeralda and the International Maxi Association—both have close ties to Rolex.
